International Book Giving Day is a volunteer initiative aimed at getting books in the hands of as many children as possible on February 14, 2013.
International Book Giving Day’s focus is on encouraging people worldwide to engage in simple acts of giving. We will invite individuals to: 1) give a book to a friend or family member, 2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read, or 3) donate a book to a local hospital, shelter or library or to an organization that distributes used books to children internationally.
In addition, we will encourage people to support the work of nonprofit organizations (i.e. charities) that work year round to give books to children, such as Room to Read, Books for Africa, Book Aid International, The Book Bus, Indigenous Literacy Foundation and Pratham Books.
For more, see International Book Giving Day’s new website: http://bookgivingday.com!

Where Are The Youth? by Dr. Jose Rizal

Where are the youth
who will consecrate
their budding years,
their idealism and
enthusiasm for the welfare
of their country?
Where are the youth
who will generously
pour out their blood to
wash away so much shame,
so much crime,
so much abomination?
Pure and spotless
must the victim be that the
sacrifice may be acceptable.
Where are you,
youth who will embody in
yourselves the vigor
of life that has lifted
our veins,
the purity of ideas that
has been contaminated
in our hearts?
We await you, youth.
Come, for we await you.

On Valentine's Day, I will be celebrating my love for books and children by participating in International Book Giving Day!

International Book Giving Day is a volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books. You are invited to participate too by:

    1. Giving a book to a friend or relative.

Is there a child in your life who would enjoy receiving a book on February 14? In lieu of or in addition to a card or box of chocolates, choose a good book to give to your child, grandchild, friend, or neighbor.

    2. Leaving a book in a waiting room or lobby.

Choose a waiting room where kids are stuck waiting and there are few to no good books available. Purchase a good book and deposit your book covertly or overtly in your waiting room of choice.

    3. Donating a book.

Wrap up a box of children’s books that your kids have outgrown and get them into the hands of children who could really use a book or two. Donate your books to your local second hand store, library, children’s hospital, or nonprofit organization working to ensure that all kids have access to books.

Add your name to the list of people giving books for International Book Giving Day at http://bookgivingday.com. Share photos of International Book Giving Day festivities by adding the hashtag #giveabook to Instagram photos.

    * The International Book Giving Day poster is by Indian children’s illustrator Priya Kuriyan. Woot woot! Please feel free to print copies and hang them in your community.

Press Release: Tahanan Launches Long-Awaited Sequels to Lola Basyang and Filipino Riddles

Riddle enthusiasts and lovers of Lola Basyang stories are in for a double treat when Tahanan Books launches its companion volumes to two popular Filipino classics on Tuesday, February 19, 5 - 7 p.m., at Figaro Café, Greenbelt 3, Makati City. The event is open to the public.

Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (Volume 2), is penned by Severino Reyes (1861-1942), author of the timeless “Tales of Lola Basyang” loved by generations of readers. Luring us back to a magical land inhabited by the likes of clever maidens, tianaks, and thirsty dragons, this fresh new anthology of twelve tales boasts such classics as “Plawtin ni Periking” (“Periking’s Flute”) and “Ang Prinsesang Naging Pulubi” (“The Princess Who Became a Beggar”). Each story is illustrated in soft, dramatic tones by award-winning illustrator Felix Mago Miguel. Co-editors Christine S. Bellen and Rebecca T. Añonuevo modernized portions of the author’s original text to better suit the sensibilities of today’s readers.

Bugtong, Bugtong (Volume 2) is a charming collection of 57 riddles in Filipino. All eyes are on Oskar, a dog that roams his master’s house and the fields beyond, playfully encountering adventures and objects presented in the form of a riddle. Creator Daniel Palma Tayona’s rich and warm palette floods the book with happy sunshine. The book is an endearing salute to the late great children’s book author Rene O. Villanueva, who wrote and collected the original Bugtong, Bugtong edition (Tahanan Books, 1998). Follow Oskar’s canine capers as he unlocks the secrets of the Filipino language. Let the guesswork begin! (Includes answers in English.)

Volumes 2 of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (ages 15 and up, P275) and Bugtong, Bugtong (ages 8 to 12, P195) are available at all National Bookstore, Powerbooks, and Fully Booked branches. Find them too on the Tahanan Books website.
